Ams AG (Swiss Stock Exchange: AMS) recently launched the AS5200L. This dual-channel rotary magnetic position sensor with I2C interface is a new design that saves space in safety-critical automotive applications.
The AS5200L has an AEC-Q100 Level 1 qualification that extends Amers Semiconductor's portfolio of magnetic position sensors with a number of unique features for wire drive functions in electric powertrain systems, such as for conventional shift levers. Rotary shift lever shift control, pedal application, etc.
Amers Semiconductor has always been known for its reliable high-performance position sensing technology, and the use of dual dies makes the performance of the AS5200L even further. The stacked structure of the die means that it can be paired with a single smaller magnet while each channel provides a consistent measurement output. Each die has a separate package pin to prevent device electrical failure from affecting both dies.
Like all Amers Semiconductor's magnetic position sensors, the AS5200L is protected from stray magnetic fields, providing accurate and repeatable measurements even in noisy magnetic fields. Extremely reliable performance and reduced system cost can be achieved by eliminating the need for additional shielding that is typically required for other magnetic position sensor ICs.
The AS5200L is available in an MLF-16 package and occupies only 5mm x 5mm, saving space. At the same time, exposed pads and wettable side plates enable quick and easy board-level solder joint inspection. For automotive system design engineers, perform precision in space-constrained vehicle electrification applications (eg, shift levers and pedals) or in a variety of other non-contact potentiometer applications (eg, knobs and joysticks) With reliable position detection, the AS5200L is the ideal choice.
The I2C interface allows easy and fast programming of relevant parameters via the host microcontroller without the need for a dedicated programmer. The AS5200L provides an I2C interface or PWM signal output angle signal with 12-bit resolution with a maximum error of ±1° due to inherent nonlinearity.
The AS5200L consumes very little power in both normal and standby modes. The intelligent low-power mode automatically reduces power consumption, so the average current per 100ms of inspection is only 1.5mA.
By default, the sensor measures a rotation angle of 0° to 360°. By setting the start and stop positions in the chip's One Time Programmable (OTP) memory, you can set a smaller range of angles based on user needs.
Thomas Mueller, director of position sensor marketing at Amers Semiconductor, said: "The AS5200L is ideal for embedded automotive applications where safety is critical. In such applications, sensors are required to be highly accurate, redundant and ultra-small. The dual 12-channel high-resolution I2C or PWM output dual-channel AS5200L is ideal for use in line-controlled shifting applications in hybrid, electric, and conventional vehicles. The AS5200L can help with outstanding performance and dual redundancy. Automotive manufacturers meet ASIL D requirements at the system level."
The AS5200L is currently in volume production and the evaluation board is available from the Amway Semiconductor ICdirect online store.
